Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the House names come from?

Salters
Magherafelt Town’s present layout owes much to its development by the Salters’ Company of London at the time of the Plantation of Ulster from 1615 onwards. The Salters’ Company has its origins in the salt trade of medieval London and they were granted ownership of the land. Just a short walk from our school is Broad Street. This was the first street of houses built by the Londoners and it is often cited as a great example of early 17th century town planning.

Sperrin
The Sperrins, or Sperrin Mountains, (from the Irish: Na Speiríní meaning "Spurs of Rock") are a range of hills in Northern Ireland and one of the largest upland areas in Ireland. The Sperrins Region is located in the centre of Northern Ireland, stretching from the western shoreline of Lough Neagh in County Tyrone, to the southern portions of County Londonderry.  The nearest mountain of this range to our school is Slieve Gallion, 397th highest summit in Ireland.

Moyola
Moyola River, Moyola Park FC and Moyola Golf Club are all found in Castledawson, part of the Magherafelt District and the home of many of our students. Lord Moyola, from Castledawson, was the penultimate Prime Minister of Northern Ireland from 1967 to 1971 and his family had owned a large estate in that area for many years previously.

Spires
Magherafelt is often referred to as ‘The Three Spires’ due to three wonderful pieces of architecture that comprise the spires of the following three churches:
St Swithins Church Of Ireland; Our Lady Of The Assumption and 1st Presbyterian.

Why aren’t my children in the same House?
Although we try hard to ensure that new children to the school join the same House as their siblings, when the House System was first set up it was not always possible to make this happen.

How do I find out about House Events?
House events are advertised in the HOUSE EVENTS section of HOUSE SYSTEM OVERVIEW link in the main HOUSE SYSTEM drop down link bar.

How can I keep up to date with the Mansion Cup competition?
The results and reports from the various competitions are found in the REPORTS section of the HOUSE SYSTEM sidemenu bar and the current scores are found by clicking on the MANSION CUP link on the same menu.
