Year 8 Admissions Criteria

When considering which children should be selected for admission, the Board of Governors will only take into account information which is detailed on or attached to the application form.

Parents should therefore ensure that all information pertaining to their chil and relevant to the school's admission criteria is stated on the application form or attached to it.

 

Respective functions of the Board of Governors and Principal in relation to Admissions to the school.

The Board of Governors formulate and review the Admission Criteria while the Principal administers the criteria. The Governors also approve admissions.

 

Criteria

In the event of over-subscription preference will be give in the order 1 to 5 set out below:

  1. Pupils who wish to transfer from traditional feeder primary schools, namely:Pupils who already have brothers or sisters in attendance at the school;
    • Ampertain,
    • Bellaghy
    • Castledawson
    • Coagh,
    • Destermartin
    • Drumard
    • Duneane,
    • Kilrea,
    • Kilross,
    • Knockcloughrim,
    • Maghera,
    • Magherafelt,
    • Moneymore,
    • Portglenone,
    • Randalstown,
    • Tobermore,
    • Spires
    • and Woods.
  2. Pupils who already have brothers or sisters at the school;
  3. Pupils who are the first or only child in the family;
  4. Pupils who have a parent in employment at the school;
  5. Date of birth will be used as a tie break with preference being given to the eldest. If two or more have the same date of birth then distance from home to school with the closest children having preference will be applied;

Applicants should note they may be required to produce documents verifying information pertinent to the school's admission criteria.

 

Admissions to Year 8 After 1 September 2014

Parents who wish to have their child considered for adission in the event of a place arising after 1 September 2014 should write to the principals secretary clearly stating this. In the event of a vacancy arising the above criteria will be applied to these applications only.

Through the dedication and skills of the PE department, Magherafelt High School has a proud history of fostering and developing sporting talent in our students.

This enables our students to compete with the very best and most talented students from across Northern Ireland, a fact confirmed by our students recent success at regional athletics meetings.

The school has produced students who have represented their country at various levels in a range of sports including netball, football, athletics, rugby. We are very proud of these achievements and strive to generate interest in sporting endeavours, develop talent and provide opportunities for learning about life and work in the process.

GCE A-Level Applied Business Studies

The Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with a broad introduction to the business sector and encourage students to develop skills, knowledge and understanding in realistic business contexts, such as discovering the problems and opportunities faced by local businesses and/or organising an enterprise activity.

AS content and assessment are presented as stepping stones to A2.  If you wish to obtain a full A Level qualification, you must complete the AS course in Year 13 and the A2 course in Year 14.

Structure of the AS Applied Business

Three unit AS Award – Students are required to take all three units.

Three A2 Units – students are required to take 3 units.  Units 7 and 9 are compulsory and students then have an optional Unit which will be chosen by the teacher.

RE- Sixth form

Sixth Form Religious Studies

The CCEA Religious Studies specification is offered at both AS and A2 Level. 

AS Level (Year 13)

Students are allocated 12 periods over two weeks. The units taught are:

• AS 2 An Introduction to the Acts of the Apostles 
• AS 4 The Christian Church in the Roman Empire: Beginnings, Expansion and External Pressure

Examples of other aspects of Human Experience are incorporated throughout both units.
There is an external exam for each unit, lasting 1 hour 20 minutes. 

A2 Level (Year 14)

Students are allocated 12 periods over two weeks. The units taught are:

• A2 2 A Study of Acts, Galatians & 1 Corinthians
• A2 4 The Development of the Christian Church in the Roman Empire to AD 325

Synoptic themes are:

• Religious Controversy
• Suffering

There is an external exam for each unit, lasting 2 hours and includes a synoptic question.
