As part of our pastoral system in Magherafelt High we are trying to establish an opportunity for young people who are ‘Young Carers’ to feel supported in school and raise an awareness about the responsibilities a young carer has.
When:
- After school Monday
- Lunch time on Thursday
What is a young carer?
Young carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse.
Young carers often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. The tasks undertaken can vary according to the nature of the illness or disability, the level and frequency of need for care and the structure of the family as a whole.
Often at times our pupils do not realise that they fall into this category and I would like to support and to assist them with meeting peers who may be in similar situations. My aim would be to raise the profile for young carers within the school community and allow them to feel safe, secure and confident by providing appropriate opportunities and encouragement for these pupils.
